Among his most significant themes, the Petroglifos de Boriquén head the list of Méndez Caratini’s numerous artistic documentations. The relevancy of this aboriginal landmark series is a discovery and dissemination through photography of a national patrimony of Puerto Rico. According to the artist, the Taíno cultural legacy and Caribbean mythology are preserved in this work as an inspiration and historical memory for generations to come. He worked on this theme for over twenty years, documenting hundreds of rock engravings not only in Puerto Rico, but also in the other Antilles.
