Méndez Caratini spent two decades documenting the community of Loíza Aldea, which is predominantly black, and blends traditions from several cultures. The cult to Santiago Apostle reflects the Afro-Caribbean tradition of combining Catholic saints with African deities. In the case of Santiago, he also represents Ogun - the Yoruba god of thunder and war.
